Learning from the Past: Overview of 18th
century breeches, using images and original examples to
better understand breeches construction and finishing.

Made to Measure: How to Draft your own Pattern

How to alter an existing pattern

How to lay out patterns for maximum efficiency and
functionality

Silk, Superfine, or Shag? Materials for Breeches
Construction

Backstitch to Buttonholes: Construction and Finishing
Techniques

Having a Fit: How to fit and adjust your Breeches –
Participants are encouraged to bring projects they are
working on for a fitting clinic.

Buckles, Buttons, and Bows: Knee Closure Systems.
Materials Needed:

Cloth (if making a new pair of breeches)

Shears
-
Hand Sewing Needles
-
Sewing Machine (if desired)
-
Cotton machine thread (if using a sewing machine)

Linen Thread ( for hand sewing -size 35/2 or 40/2
preferred)

Silk Twist (buttonholes on silk or woolen breeches)

Beeswax
-
Tailor’s Chalk or Quilters Pencils
-
Pins
-
Pencils and erasers
-
Yardstick
Cost: $80.00 per person
– Cost covers handouts, pattern materials and instruction.
“Fitting models” may attend with their tailors at no
additional cost. Class size limited to 15 participants.

Don’t like the way you look in your cap?
Its’ not you, it’s your cap!
Try on a variety of caps and then make
the one that is flattering to you. Workshop will include
all you need to make a new cap that you will love!
Cost: $35.00 per person

Constructing a
Girl's Back Lacing Gown
Saturday, March
3, 2007, 9 AM to 5 PM
Location:
Major John Buttrick House, Minute Man National Park,
Concord, MA
Conducted by Hallie Larkin, Sue Felshin and Stephanie
Smith
Using a
period artifact as a guide, you will create a pattern, cut
out fabric and start to sew a young girl’s back lacing
gown. Participants can supply their own fabric or purchase
an appropriate fabric at the workshop for an additional
charge.
Cost: $35.00 per person
