The Lisp dialect GOAL used in Jak and Dexter allowed
this sort of thing (from my reading on the Gamasutra
article).  They had a common VM layer and you could
program in this VM 'assembler' or in higher level Lisp
(and in varying degrees of abstraction thereof).  It's
a damn good idea - similar to inline assembler in C
but more portable and I think more open to
optimisation.
