As a BBNer, i worked with Ascent code from 9/4/90 to 9/15/95.
We provided a pair of tools used for military transportation planning, collectively know as DART.  And i worked with Ed Barton and Eric Tiffany and others from Ascent during this time.
My impression is that forth was a dynamic language that replaced having to write in  C. Lisp generating forth seems like a good thing.
