So far we have offered no theory as to why pointy ears may be associated in our minds with intelligence. Consider the two pictures shown below, one of a normal squirrel, and one of a squirrel with pointy ears. Compare your impressions of the two. The pointy-eared squirrel seems by far the more alert. Thinking aout this in terms of animals, the reason for this impression is obvious- animals tend to raise their their ears when interested in something. You've seen this with dogs no doubt. Most humans have lost this ability, but it is reasonable to suppose that we still retain the association between raised ears and alertness. And since alertness is associated with intelligence, our case is made. (more)
